Hem Shortening Calculator — Take Up Hems

Calculate new hem position and fabric to remove when shortening.

How We Calculate This

The calculator determines how much to remove and where to cut based on the current and desired lengths plus the new hem allowance.

The formula

Amount to shorten = Current length - Desired length

Cut position = Desired length + New hem allowance + Pressing ease

Fabric to remove = (Current length + Current hem) - Cut position

The cut position is where the raw edge sits once you fold up the new hem plus a small turn-under margin for a clean double-fold finish. Fabric to remove is simply the original raw edge minus that cut line, so it always agrees with the cut position.
