What is the difference between cut-away and tear-away stabiliser?

Cut-away stabiliser is trimmed around the design and stays permanently behind the embroidery, providing ongoing support. Tear-away is removed after stitching. Use cut-away for stretchy fabrics and dense designs; tear-away for stable fabrics.

When do I need water-soluble stabiliser?

Water-soluble stabiliser (topping) is used on terry cloth, fleece, and high-pile fabrics to prevent stitches sinking into the texture. It dissolves in water after stitching. It is also used for freestanding lace embroidery.

How many layers of stabiliser should I use?

One layer suits most woven cottons. Stretchy knits need 2 layers of cut-away. Very heavy designs on any fabric may need 2 layers. Using too little causes puckering; too much makes fabric stiff.

What size should stabiliser pieces be?

Cut stabiliser 2-3cm larger than the hoop on each side. It must be large enough to be gripped by the hoop or adhered to the fabric completely within the hoop area.
