A bolt end (or remnant) is the last piece of fabric left on a bolt. Shops often sell these at a discount (typically 20–50% off) because they cannot guarantee a specific length. They are great value if the piece is large enough for your project.

How should I measure a bolt end?

Ask the shop to measure the length, or measure it yourself along the selvedge edge. The width is the standard bolt width printed on the label. Bolt ends may have uneven cut edges, so measure the usable length (the shortest selvedge-to-selvedge distance).

What if the area is enough but the length is not?

Area alone is not sufficient — your pattern pieces must physically fit on the fabric. A very short but wide piece may have enough area but not enough length for tall pieces like trouser legs or dress fronts. Always check your longest pattern piece fits.
