How much extra fabric do I need for pattern matching?

As a rule of thumb, add one pattern repeat per metre of fabric. For precise calculation, this tool works out the extra needed based on your specific repeat size and number of pieces. Larger repeats need proportionally more extra fabric.

What is a pattern repeat?

A pattern repeat is the distance before the printed or woven design repeats itself. It is measured vertically (lengthwise) on the fabric. Common repeats range from 5cm (small prints) to 60cm+ (large florals or plaids). Check the fabric label or measure between identical motifs.

Do I need to match all fabric patterns?

Matching is most important for: stripes and plaids (especially at side seams and centre front), large floral prints (at noticeable seams), and any bold geometric print. Small all-over prints and solids do not need matching. Diagonal prints and one-way designs need extra fabric but for different reasons.

How do I match patterns when cutting?

Lay out all pieces on single-layer fabric, aligning the same point in the repeat at matching notches on each piece. Pin through the pattern motif at seam lines to ensure alignment. Cut one piece, then position the next to match at joining seams.

Adjusted Piece Length = ceil(Piece Length / Repeat) x Repeat

Extra per Piece = Adjusted Length - Original Length
