Sewing for the Home

Home sewing projects are an excellent way to create custom soft furnishings that perfectly match your decor. From cushion covers to duvet covers, the key is accurate measurement and allowing for seam allowances and closures. UK standard bed sizes differ from international sizes — a UK double duvet is 200cm × 200cm, king is 225cm × 220cm, and super king is 260cm × 220cm.

Furnishing fabrics are typically wider (137–150cm) than dressmaking fabrics, which helps when making wide items like duvet covers and tablecloths. For items that need to be wider than the fabric bolt, you will need to join widths with a seam. For tablecloths, place the seam to one side rather than down the centre for a better appearance.

Cushion covers should be cut 1–2cm smaller than the pad size for a plump look. Zip or envelope-back closures each require different fabric allowances. For table linen, allow at least 20–30cm drop on each side, and add 2.5cm per side for a double-turned hem.
