Why are pattern sizes different from shop sizes?

Pattern sizes are based on actual body measurements and have not changed with fashion trends. High street sizes have gradually increased (size inflation), so a shop size 12 today has larger measurements than a pattern size 12. Always use your measurements, not your shop size.

How do I take accurate body measurements?

Wear well-fitting underwear (or the undergarments you plan to wear with the finished garment). Measure bust at the fullest point, waist at the natural waistline (narrowest point), and hips at the fullest point (usually 20–23cm below the waist). Keep the tape measure snug but not tight, parallel to the floor.

What if my measurements fall between two sizes?

If between sizes, choose the larger size — it is easier to take in than let out. For tops and dresses, prioritise bust measurement. For skirts and trousers, prioritise hip measurement. Many modern patterns offer multi-size cutting lines.

Do all pattern companies use the same sizing?

No. While most major companies (Vogue, Butterick, McCall's, Simplicity) use similar sizing, independent pattern companies may use different size charts. Always check the specific pattern company's size chart on the pattern envelope or website.
