What size should a quilt label be?

A standard quilt label is 10–15cm wide and 8–12cm tall. This gives enough space for the quilt name, maker, date, recipient and care instructions. Smaller labels (8x6cm) work for wall hangings and baby quilts.

What fabric is best for quilt labels?

Use a smooth, tightly woven cotton such as quilting cotton or lawn. Light colours (white, cream, pale pastels) take ink and printing best. Pre-wash the fabric to remove sizing before writing or printing your label text.

How do I attach a quilt label?

The most durable method is sewing the label into the binding seam along one edge. Alternatively, fold the edges under and hand-stitch all four sides to the quilt backing using a blind hem stitch with matching thread.

What should I write on a quilt label?

Include the quilt name, your name, the date completed, the recipient name and occasion, care instructions (wash temperature, dry flat etc.), and your location. Some quilters add a short personal message.

Cut size formulas

Folded: Width + 2 × seam allowance, Height × 2 + 2 × seam allowance
Pressed edge: Width + 2 × fold allowance, Height + 2 × fold allowance
Raw edge: Width + 1cm, Height + 1cm (for fray-check margin)

Labels per row = floor(fabric width ÷ cut width). Fabric length = rows needed × cut height.
