Seam Allowance Fabric Calculator — Extra Fabric for Pattern Pieces

Calculate how much extra fabric is needed when adding seam allowances to all pattern pieces, and see the total fabric required with cutting layout.

Total count of individual pattern pieces to be cut — count each piece separately, including those cut on the fold

Average finished width of your pattern pieces (before seam allowance) — estimate from your pattern layout

Average finished height of your pattern pieces (before seam allowance) — for a dress, this is roughly the bodice or skirt length

Width of the seam allowance to be added to each seamed edge — 1.5 cm is standard for UK commercial patterns; 1 cm is common for independent patterns

Average number of edges on each piece that will be seamed (not hemmed) — a bodice piece joined at side, shoulder and armhole has 3 seamed edges

How We Calculate This

Each pattern piece is enlarged by the seam allowance on every seamed edge and by the hem allowance on hemmed edges.

Cut dimensions per piece

Cut width = Finished width + (Seam allowance × 2)

Cut height = Finished height + seam allowances on seamed edges + hem allowances on hemmed edges

Cutting layout

The calculator works out how many cut pieces fit across the fabric width, taking layout efficiency into account. The total fabric required is rows needed × cut height.

Waste percentage

Waste = (Total fabric area − Total piece area) / Total fabric area × 100. This reflects unavoidable off-cuts between pieces.
