A flounce is a circular ruffle cut from fabric donuts (rings). The inner circle attaches to the garment; the outer edge falls in soft waves. The difference between inner and outer radius is the flounce depth. Flounces create beautiful rippling movement.

How does fullness affect the flounce?

Fullness of 1 creates gentle waves. Fullness of 2 creates medium ruffles (standard). Fullness of 3 creates very full, dramatic ruffles. Higher fullness means more fabric circles are needed.

What is the difference between a flounce and a ruffle?

A flounce is shaped (cut as a circle) so it naturally ripples without gathering. A ruffle is a straight strip that is gathered. Flounces hang more elegantly; ruffles have more uniform gathers.

How do I join multiple flounce circles?

Cut along one radius of each circle to open it into a spiral. Join the straight edges with seams. Press seams open. The joined flounce should equal the attachment edge length when slightly stretched.

How We Calculate This

A flounce is cut from circular rings of fabric. The inner radius determines the attachment edge curve; the outer radius determines the total flounce depth.

The formula

Inner circumference = Attachment length ÷ Fullness

Inner radius = Inner circumference ÷ (2π)

Outer radius = Inner radius + Flounce depth + SA

Circles needed = Attachment length ÷ (2π × Inner radius)
